Hope it's going well. It's action packed over here so far. Instead of weighing this blog down, I'm going to throw some fun links and pictures at you. What a fun way to kill a couple minutes, right?<br />
I just saw a dude named Aaron Drapin talk yesterday. I dragged my friend <a href="http://teacupfullofwhisky.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Terri </a>with me, she says she doesn't get out much.<br />
Mr. Drapin is amazing designer who's done a logo for anything you can think of. Nike? The Government? A hot dog stand? The legendary John Hughes (RIP)? Sub Pop? Done and done and done, etcetera.<br />
We are almost the same age, the same build--cut from the same cloth one could say, except he is a success story. I'm still waiting for mine. Check him out here, you'll love him:<br />

instagram: @draplin<br />
Notice I linked you to his merch page. He don't pay the bills with sweet sweet words. Buy something cool and support good design.<br />
Here's what I've been up to. If you don't follow me on instagram (@nealbretonart) you really should. You gotta be bored waiting around for the bus blog to arrive to internet town.<br />
Anyway, pictures!!!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also ventured out of my comfort zone with the help of some special people to create this baby:</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"> Here is a closeup of all the weirdness.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll probably be spending the majority of 2015 creating new work. This year's show slate is tentative, possibly something in Orange County, Palm Springs and maybe one big thing in SLO, though I am awfully sick of doing shows in this town. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My good pal Nick Wilkinson is got some exciting things going on, you should check them out. If you're a local lurker, check out <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LEFTFIELDslo" target="_blank">Left Field</a>. He'll be opening a gallery in the back of this sweet curio shop. If you're lurking in the LA/Santa Barbara area, check out his <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MCASantaBarbara" target="_blank">MCA Santa Barbara</a> show coming soon!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, local lurkers--check out <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LEEGOLDEART" target="_blank">LEE GOLDE</a> if you haven't already. I'm pretty hopeful for these brave young men, it's not easy opening cultural hotspots in a whitebread town like San Louie.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Until next time, lurkers.</div>

</div>
Darkness falls on this blog from time to time, lurkers, but don't worry. I'm still alive. September is a boring month anyway, isn't it? October is where it's at. I started a new series in an attempt to paint like an adult:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7aipMGSwkLY/VFFCjr7jPII/AAAAAAAAAjw/l2v6QkV5w_I/s1600/Untitled.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7aipMGSwkLY/VFFCjr7jPII/AAAAAAAAAjw/l2v6QkV5w_I/s1600/Untitled.jpg" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm not sure what I'm calling this series just yet, or how many I will be doing, but they are far more personal than most of the things that I paint. A lot of meaningful symbolism will be embedded in these works.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm also still largely interested in painting pretty pools and other fun stuff like cacti:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Zs9ygc4YOJ4/VFFNbLmRjxI/AAAAAAAAAk4/AHb1bBUGCpM/s1600/dark%2Bside%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bpool.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Zs9ygc4YOJ4/VFFNbLmRjxI/AAAAAAAAAk4/AHb1bBUGCpM/s1600/dark%2Bside%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bpool.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--A6cHUrKv8Q/VFFE48UJixI/AAAAAAAAAj8/ShwSosTWZpE/s1600/cactus.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--A6cHUrKv8Q/VFFE48UJixI/AAAAAAAAAj8/ShwSosTWZpE/s1600/cactus.jpg" height="320" width="236" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A studio visit to my good pal <a href="http://www.nwilkinson.com/" target="_blank">Nick Wilkinson</a> always seems to inspire me color-wise, but confuses me in that his body of work can be so different but make sense in the same way through his use of different mediums. I look at these two paintings and they could have been done by two different people. My work is schizophrenic and although that's bad for <a href="http://www.fionableu.com/" target="_blank">gallery</a> <a href="http://www.gallery446.com/" target="_blank">owners</a> trying to sell my stuff, it's the only way I can continue to paint, which has been very difficult this year. I just want to give up and be an accountant. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In other news, Jeff and Bret and I are planning a holiday group show at Fiasco! Gallery's new location.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iTmEf1ixpE0/VFFG6Z4AKRI/AAAAAAAAAkI/lUFYdLjwJbM/s1600/WP_20141024_002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iTmEf1ixpE0/VFFG6Z4AKRI/AAAAAAAAAkI/lUFYdLjwJbM/s1600/WP_20141024_002.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">Yeah great work guys holding down that wall while I paint something</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The show will include several local artists, an awesome DJ, a food truck, and some local beer. It's on December 6th, from sundown to about midnight. You should really go, it's good for you to get out of the house now and then. I'll post the address everywhere in due time, for now just keep your pants on and remember that something is going down on the 6th of December.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There was a show at Casita Del Pueblo in Whittier this month, not many people attended it and it was weird/awful to be back in a town I spent a brief moment living in. At least I like what I painted for the show:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DWJk_oK-AEY/VFFKkYZ3psI/AAAAAAAAAkU/BWKuLTvpH4Y/s1600/Bored%2Bto%2BDeath.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DWJk_oK-AEY/VFFKkYZ3psI/AAAAAAAAAkU/BWKuLTvpH4Y/s1600/Bored%2Bto%2BDeath.jpg" height="306" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4DK_hAdNyQw/VFFKkobna8I/AAAAAAAAAkc/0T1lajYCYBs/s1600/Deaths%2BHarvest.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4DK_hAdNyQw/VFFKkobna8I/AAAAAAAAAkc/0T1lajYCYBs/s1600/Deaths%2BHarvest.jpg" height="320" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zCq_yYArTds/VFFKkhTM35I/AAAAAAAAAkY/FKYLjU5zbKA/s1600/Dia%2BDe%2BLos%2BZapato.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zCq_yYArTds/VFFKkhTM35I/AAAAAAAAAkY/FKYLjU5zbKA/s1600/Dia%2BDe%2BLos%2BZapato.jpg" height="320" width="249" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-goVbNdFYzY4/VFFKlp3Ff8I/AAAAAAAAAko/ry_F5iGSLkU/s1600/Rockford.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-goVbNdFYzY4/VFFKlp3Ff8I/AAAAAAAAAko/ry_F5iGSLkU/s1600/Rockford.jpg" height="292" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are some really great artists in this show, there are some really great pieces. I was lucky enough to co-curate this annual affair, and despite some resistance I think the walls looked pretty good. What do I know, I'm not some jerk from LA anymore, I'm a jerk who lives in a podunk town on the central coast of California.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Luckily, aside from the holiday-ish party in December at Fiasco!, I have no other shows to do. I am burned out and hate painting so much if it had a face I'd spit in it. Maybe if you're reading this you have purchased work from me, thank you, good for you. I don't think I'll be making much work next year and the year after that I hope to make even less. Does that make them more valuable? According to what I know about comic books and beanie babies, yes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you're reading this and you hate me, I guess you were right about me and you win. Congrats. Happy Holidays everyone!</div>

<br />
I am happy to announce that you can now see a couple of my paintings in <a href="http://www.fionableu.com/" target="_blank">Fiona Bleu Gallery</a> in Morro Bay. I figured if <a href="http://www.jeffclaassen.com/" target="_blank">Jeff</a> is cool enough to show in there, I should just barely make it in riding his thai-iced-tea-stained coattails. I don't have a picture of the gallery, but I did just take this pic with FBG owner Rowan Chase:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL_DTPnFG95L_5AAjS_8WFORdl-6pwQa7WmTRaIvpRRa5Pz5X7DT9WFsMeOVI6aQfDK7xscFH059QQT9NUQjLDJ-IfhjAr3aRCHL4BX49RPQQuqPmNtSprpjB_2GJsQZ0WsvRu8Sai1WN4/s1600/WP_20140819_002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL_DTPnFG95L_5AAjS_8WFORdl-6pwQa7WmTRaIvpRRa5Pz5X7DT9WFsMeOVI6aQfDK7xscFH059QQT9NUQjLDJ-IfhjAr3aRCHL4BX49RPQQuqPmNtSprpjB_2GJsQZ0WsvRu8Sai1WN4/s1600/WP_20140819_002.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I also will be showing some of my pool paintings at <a href="http://www.sansliege.com/" target="_blank">Sans Liege</a> tasting room in Pismo Beach come September. I guess my paintings wanted a coastal vacation. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Worry not, SLO locals, or SLOcals as some people say, you can still catch me painting away at Huckleberry Market. Oh, you want a link? <a href="http://www.huckleberrymarket.com/" target="_blank">Here</a> you go.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
More news sooner or later. In the meantime, buy something cheap I need money for coffee:</div>

<br />
It's been a minute, I know...but check this out:<br />
<br />
I was delighted to be asked to be a part of Flower Pepper Gallery's "<a href="http://www.flower-pepper.com/portfolios/exhibits-events?cpt_item=summer-flies-art-extravaganza" target="_blank">Extravaganza</a>" in late July, where <a href="http://www.thesappystudio.com/" target="_blank">Walt Hall</a>, <a href="http://www.jonmeasures.com/THE_ALL_NEW_JONMEASURES/gallery.html" target="_blank">Jon Measures</a> and I were painting for real life in front of curious gallery goers.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.huckleberrymarket.com/" target="_blank">Huckleberry Market</a> opened, a project I am excited to be a part of. I am the resident artist & illustrator there, where I will be working part time trying to sell all kinds of fun stuff, including plants selectively picked by my good pal Nick Wilkinson, owner of <a href="http://www.grownursery.com/" target="_blank">Grow Nursery</a>.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I took a part-time job at the first job I ever landed in SLO (er, re-took?)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u0bXvMXkXUk/U-Er7uyvBkI/AAAAAAAAAes/fQHWd4Ws5Ik/s1600/WP_20140725_002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u0bXvMXkXUk/U-Er7uyvBkI/AAAAAAAAAes/fQHWd4Ws5Ik/s1600/WP_20140725_002.jpg" height="200" width="112" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am painting the wall of Artisan, the coolest eatery in Paso. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--u8OGxsddpo/U-Er-348JmI/AAAAAAAAAe0/iQx8N5zhYl0/s1600/WP_20140802_006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--u8OGxsddpo/U-Er-348JmI/AAAAAAAAAe0/iQx8N5zhYl0/s1600/WP_20140802_006.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">Don't judge me it's not even close to being finished in this picture.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.jeffclaassen.com/" target="_blank">Jeff</a> is painting a wall too, isn't that precious?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LnMsUWr3OWI/U-Er--Ghu3I/AAAAAAAAAe4/Yhc7CXaRu8k/s1600/WP_20140803_002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LnMsUWr3OWI/U-Er--Ghu3I/AAAAAAAAAe4/Yhc7CXaRu8k/s1600/WP_20140803_002.jpg" height="200" width="112" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">Hi, I'm Jeff, take my pitture</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></div>
Saturday, August 2 marked my last Art After Dark in Paso's Studios on the Park. Why? Well, I've been asked to leave for trying to make things better, or at least trying to make the powers that be treat the people paying their rent treat resident artists like people and not cows. Fascism is heavy, man. I just want to pay rent and paint stuff for cool people. I highly recommend NOT putting dollars into the pockets of Studios. If you happen to be in town for the weekend, walk right by "suggested donation" box and give those dollars to the artists you see (that don't have the last name Laddon).<br />
<br />
So, some good stuff, but also some bad. It's been a great summer for painting pools & tennis courts!<br />

<br />
How's the heat treating you? Don't answer that, I don't know if I care to talk about the weather right now.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.temescalfirstfriday.com/" target="_blank">Oakland</a> was a blast, thanks to all those who came by ONLY. If you didn't come by, don't try sneaking off with any accolades. Big ups to <a href="http://www.skylitesnowballs.com/" target="_blank">Katie</a>, <a href="http://lacedcakes.com/" target="_blank">Cortney</a> and <a href="http://17jewelssalonspa.com/" target="_blank">Julie</a> for being such good sports. Also, superstar painter <a href="http://nicrodriguezart.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">Nic Rodriguez</a> came by to paint live like a real person. It was pretty cool.<br />
<br />
That was then, this is now. Check out this show coming up:<br />

<br />
Happy Mother's day to those who happened to have given birth to something out there. I spent Mom's day with my mom in the garage, nicknamed "The Vault" because it holds everything I have ever collected. Sports cards, Japanese robots, GI Joes, comic books from the 80s and 90s, it's all there. At least it was cool while we were in there sorting through boxes of stuff that I can hock for art supplies and gas money. If you like any of the aforementioned nerd manna, feel free to email me inquiries <a href="mailto:breton.neal@gmail.com" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
I am hitting some old stomping grounds this year. Come on by and say hi/pick up a piece of art/slap my face for breaking your heart:<br />

<br />
So nice to see you. Here's what's happening lately. Lots of upcoming events involving me and my pals. 17 Jewels Salon in Oakland has decided to be nice to me. Not only are they showing Jeff and I in their space in June, but in May they gave a show to my good pal Nic Rodriguez. Here is the skinny on that dude:<br />
<br />
<i>Tracy, California artist Nic Rodriguez has only been painting canvas for 5 years, but has always had an innate ability to craft amazing compositions in dozens upon dozens of sketchbooks. A proud graduate of continuation school, he taught art to his fellow students. Despite "settling down" as father and husband, Nic's quirky sense of visual humor and social commentary remains unchanged. With roots in graffiti art, he explores the underbelly of everyday life through his dynamic figurative linework and bold color choices.</i><div>
<i><br /></i><div style="text-align: center;">
Here are some examples of his work:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All Bay Area friends would have a great time hanging out at <a href="http://17jewelssalonspa.com/" target="_blank">17 Jewels Salon</a> at 4801 Telegraph on Friday May 2 from 5-9 pm. Snacks provided by <a href="http://lacedcakes.com/" target="_blank">Laced Cakes Bakery</a>, even! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Scheduled to appear: yours truly! I'll be helping my pal Nic make sure his paintings aren't crooked and he doesn't say the F word in front of families. Come by and say howdy and have a cupcake!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will also be delivering some artwork to some awesome Bay Area people who stopped by Fiasco! Gallery. With help from some nerdy woodshop/engineer friends, this piece is now powered by a plug and not batteries!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now if I could only find the contact info for the guy who bought it...</div>

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Hey Lurkers- Here's a rant <a href="http://www.jeffclaassen.com/blog" target="_blank">Jeff</a> and I wrote for the folks tuned into the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/fiascogallery" target="_blank">Fiasco!</a> Gallery page. Your continued support is appreciated and still needed as another amazing gallery, <a href="http://www.valefineart.com/" target="_blank">Vale Fine Art</a>, closes its doors in a couple of days. This is unexpected and bittersweet news. I feel like I am really hitting my stride as a curator, the Vale show was one of the best things I've done, especially coming off the <a href="http://www.newtimesslo.com/art/10719/neal-bretons-savages-ravage-studios-on-the-park-in-paso-robles-with-their-second-annual-group-show/" target="_blank">Savages</a> show at <a href="http://www.studiosonthepark.org/" target="_blank">Studios on the Park</a>. Hard to consider myself a successful curator when sales are so inconsistent. Curator reads to me like "dude who hangs rad artwork that totally flies off the wall for $$$", and right now I'm just "dude who hangs rad artwork". </span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">An article about the group show written by Erin Messer can be seen <a href="http://www.newtimesslo.com/art/10852/its-a-group-thing-the-vfa-3rd-annual-group-show-brings-the-paso-robles-village-vanguard-back-to-vale-fine-art/" target="_blank">here</a>. Thanks for digesting the word soup below.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">So, you’ve come to the shows. All of them. You’ve danced, you’ve nibbled snacks, you loved the work on the walls. You’ve complimented the artists, you’ve even brought friends and family to the show to see what’s going on in what we can now call an “art community”. You’ve told us that we have put on a great show. A lot of work went into creating the event, so we are grateful. Without you, events aren’t fun or memorable. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Here is the heavy part, though-- while you being there is important, what’s more important is that you show your support with your money. It almost sounds shallow and might be insulting, but your compliments don’t pay the rent, and don’t pay for more work to get done. If everyone walked into their favorite restaurant from now on and only told them they made the best meal, they would close. Galleries in this county don’t show the work that we want to see because we don’t financially support it enough. If buying a painting you are obsessed with sets you apart from that new pair of shoes or going on a couple dates or even if it means you don’t get to buy food from the fancy grocery store this month, then so be it. Now is the time to make a difference. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Hopefully some of you reading this get it, and have supported. Cities like Portland and Oakland sell incredible, affordable and accessible art in salons, yogurt shops and cafes. Only a handful of artists in this county can say they have sold in such places. People who have coordinated these shows gave valiant efforts to work things out with artists, musicians, caterers and business owners. Lena Rushing, Anna Weltner, Laykin Hamilton, Brigham Baker, Leslie Clark Grey, Nick Wilkinson, Neal and Jeff have been putting on shows in this area for more than five years now. Most of you reading this have taken part in some way--you’re an artist, your girlfriend/boyfriend/friend paints, your brain loves color and your mouth likes beer and cake. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">We are glad you showed your support, the people who own the gallery are impressed that we can pack in a place. They aren’t impressed when you leave without buying something. Invest in the future of a vibrant art scene by talking with your wallet. Artists work hard and most I’ve asked would rather show their work on the wall of a nice gallery (where people come to see art exclusively) and not a retail place that sells something else to pay their bills. If you want to support the artist you know, buy something from the gallery they are showing at. No one is saying you shouldn’t buy direct from your artist friends, but when an artist gets a decent show at a good gallery, do more than come by for a hug and a handshake.</span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">This Saturday in Paso Robles at Vale Fine Art, pieces by Walt Hall are available for $125 and up. Walt Hall is an amazing artist. We think so. Juxtapoz thinks so. Look him up. I know that if you don’t have a job, spending $125 is impossible to think about when you have rent hanging over your head, but to those of you who have the means, what gives? In the most black and white of terms, this is how venues that show contemporary or cutting edge work die out. The lack of financial support makes gallery owners cut and run to bigger cities. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">No violins will be playing when Vale closes their doors after this Saturday, April 19th to open somewhere more lucrative. We’re not asking for a handout. You give money, you get a painting, not a vague sense that you helped, somehow, probably. Everybody wins. If you need to feel good about your money, support not only a local business but a person who creates. Do so while looking at an awesome new piece to hang in your bedroom/in your office/over your toilet that you bought from a gallery setting. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">We here at Fiasco! welcome an open dialogue about this subject. Here are some topics we would like your opinion on:</span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Do you appreciate/support these shows or are you coming as obligation to a friend/family member?</span></div>

Look at all the fanfare the Savages show has sprouted!<br />
<br />
Erin Messer of The New Times write up can be read <a href="http://www.newtimesslo.com/art/10719/neal-bretons-savages-ravage-studios-on-the-park-in-paso-robles-with-their-second-annual-group-show/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Stock Magazine online took some time out from being cool and did a spread <a href="http://wearestock.com/the-savages-paso-robles/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Joshua Brinckerhoff of Culprit Media Group spontaneously showed up and put together a little film you can see <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjlJn72zq1I&list=UUDFRswiT9yc4Pp-Z14PpwYg&feature=share" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Hayley Thomas Cain of the Paso Robles Press wrote a cool piece you can read <a href="http://www.hayleythomas.com/?p=1958">here</a>.<br />
<br />
As fellow artist friend <a href="http://tylerhjortlandpaintings.bigcartel.com/" target="_blank">Ty Hjortland</a> said "we are king shits of turd island".<br />
<br />
If you want to make me feel good, you can spend 10 minutes filling out a couple of questions on the SLO New Times <i>Best Of</i> poll, and vote for me on entry #63 "best visual artist" even if I am really more "dude who doodles weird stuff and throws art shows". Link to poll <a href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/bestofslocounty" target="_blank">HERE</a>.<br />
<a href="http://www.jeffclaassen.com/" target="_blank">Jeffy C</a> has won this baby a couple years in a row, and it would be awesome if I had an award to put on my refrigerator as well.<br />
<br />
So a crazy mix-up with my pals at Sally Loos has put my show a little later than I thought. April 15 will debut a whole new series of mine called "The Lonely Iceberg". Ask for it by name!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I'll be showing some cool new non-fox related stuff at the best custom made jewelry store in SLO, <a href="http://baxtermoerman.com/" target="_blank">Baxter Moermon.</a> "What non-fox related stuff?" you're asking, mostly because you are bored at work. Well, this one for example:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-svRic5vQ_ig/UrMiJDAGLLI/AAAAAAAAAPk/SeexVceNCIo/s1600/downfinal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-svRic5vQ_ig/UrMiJDAGLLI/AAAAAAAAAPk/SeexVceNCIo/s320/downfinal.jpg" width="317" /></a></div>
I've decided to continue on my architecture kick, painting mostly bite-sized paintings for home or office use! Here are the details about the show:<br />
Stardate: January 3, 2014<br />
Where: Baxter Moermon 1118 Morro Street, SLO (next to the horrible Granada hotel)<br />
Time: 5-9<br />
Bring: Money, Rootbeer, Cookies<br />
<br />
I'll be selling prints, the same sort of originals/prints you can buy on my <a href="https://squareup.com/market/neal-breton" target="_blank">SQUARE</a> store. If you have the means, do stop by, won't you?<br />
<br />

What have you been up to? Did you miss me? I took November off apparently, it slips my mind to write on the ol' blog sometimes. Poor taste on my part, considering I am giving out my business card at an alarming rate. Imagine the amount of gum stuck to those cards, the teeth that have been picked, the overstuffed wallets made uncomfortable!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GDL3ORkV9_s/UqOTmhvQcXI/AAAAAAAAAOQ/af8lNiAYZ5s/s1600/walet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GDL3ORkV9_s/UqOTmhvQcXI/AAAAAAAAAOQ/af8lNiAYZ5s/s320/walet.jpg" width="229" /></a></div>
<br />
Anyway, I hate that "tell me about your life in three sentences" question. I always end up saying something stupid, like "well you know" or "living the dream" or "nuthin' much". Lame. Since the blog is made for that kind of stuff, I will now start sending people here. No answers, just flip them a business card and walk away.<br />
<br />
I've been busy here at Fiasco!, Jeff and I had a very successful <a href="http://www.indiegogo.com/" target="_blank">indiegogo</a> campaign, and we are slaving away on all the collaborations people had donated money to...and by slaving, I mean it's Jeff's fault we haven't started. Right under the bus, <a href="http://www.jeffclaassen.com/" target="_blank">Claassen</a>. TAKE THAT!<br />
<br />
I am officially moving on from the Skulk/Deer series. The great thing about the studio/gallery in Paso is that you get feedback from the average Joe n Jane on the street. That's also the bad part, and honestly if I have to explain these pieces to someone who is undeserving (read as: snarky & ignorant) anymore I'd rather light them on fire. The paintings, I mean...I think.<br />
The sour-faced elderly, the drunks pointing, the parents ripping their kids away from our space; the picture taking without permission, that horrific song about foxes have beat it out of me. It was a social experiment and I have painstakingly reached my answer: Oakland, Portland and LA get this series and the Central Coast most certainly does not.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_IsiV_BkoOQ/UqOTuKrkRgI/AAAAAAAAAOY/IbQv7KssUkw/s1600/whathappenedtoyou.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_IsiV_BkoOQ/UqOTuKrkRgI/AAAAAAAAAOY/IbQv7KssUkw/s320/whathappenedtoyou.jpg" width="253" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9-V38O4ykH0/UqOUkdXlBKI/AAAAAAAAAOo/WEKC4P3AG2U/s1600/WP_20131207_002+(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9-V38O4ykH0/UqOUkdXlBKI/AAAAAAAAAOo/WEKC4P3AG2U/s320/WP_20131207_002+(1).jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
In other super fun news, while I was begging for indiegogo money, I wrote an old pal of mine (hey Nancer) and got lucky. It just so happened that my old boss who runs some things at Paramount Pictures gives a gift bag to the hard working assistant types. Nancy thought it would be cool if I made a special print of the Paramount landmarks for said goodie bag. Check it out!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-p8OJmAuoFF4/UqOTz_sZApI/AAAAAAAAAOg/7s6fDbVjXwo/s1600/WP_20131205_001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-p8OJmAuoFF4/UqOTz_sZApI/AAAAAAAAAOg/7s6fDbVjXwo/s320/WP_20131205_001.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
I know you wish you had one, but you just can't. There were only 125 made and they were all for those special assistant type folks. <br />
<br />
In other other news, it looks like I have some crazy shows going down in 2014. Ok, they aren't crazy; they are just shows. I'm trying to dazzle you with marketing-speak. I'll be showing at <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/BaxterMoerman" target="_blank">Baxter-Moermon</a> in January, and March will be hectic- Sally Loos AND the second installment of the Young Savages group show in <a href="http://www.studiosonthepark.org/" target="_blank">Paso</a>.<br />
I've also temporarily been handed the responsibility to hang work at a little place called<a href="https://www.facebook.com/eatzfreshfoodfast" target="_blank"> Eatz</a> in downtown SLO. The walls are purty and they made this<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fredthursday/10840316766/" target="_blank"> building picture</a> I did look pretty pimped out. So if any of you lurkers are artists, you should write me and show me your wares. I'll do my best to make you famous.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lastly, I am planning on making some prints of my Los Angeles period work.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Limited edition of 10 or so, I don't know. They will be shiny and pretty and 5x7", perfect for your cubicle or manhole cover, or wherever you people work. I'm also slightly interested in doing some commission work, so don't be a stranger. Or do, and keep having crappy art around you. Happy festivus, right?</div>

It feels like I don't have enough time to tell you about all the stuffs going on, and that have gone on. Hang on to your hats, if you are wearing one. If you're not, go get a hat, put it on, and hang on to it.<br />
<br />
July was fun: Electric Popsicle was a big hit, we sold about 10 paintings and made Brick House Goods a cooler place to hang out in. I sold my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fredthursday/9594216110/in/set-72157632582872872" target="_blank">Obstacle 1</a> painting to good pals Dan &<a href="http://louisescornerblog.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> Louise</a>. Many thanks, guys!<br />

August was crazy: Good buddy <a href="http://www.jeffclaassen.com/" target="_blank">Jeff Claassen</a> and I opened a working studio/gallery aptly named<a href="https://www.facebook.com/fiascogallery" target="_blank"> Fiasco Gallery</a>, within the hallowed halls of <a href="http://www.studiosonthepark.org/artists/artist-directory.php" target="_blank">Studios on the Park</a> in Paso Robles. So far, we been lucky enough to get good press, and a lot of positive reinforcement. Spending time with JC in the studio is like some kind of painting summer camp.<br />
The<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fredthursday/sets/72157635232475386/" target="_blank"> Skulk </a>series continues to be a topic of conversation with people of all ages and types. At this point, it's like 60/40 shocked/awkward/rude to positive reaction, but that 40% makes a big difference when you're sitting in a studio painting your ass off.<br />
<br />
September promises to be interesting, I am part of a 4 person <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/211983788961160/" target="_blank">group show</a> at <a href="http://steynberggallery.com/" target="_blank">Steynberg Gallery</a>. I'm pretty honored to sneak in with those ladies, and it promises to be a good show. The opening is Friday, September 6th from 6-9pm.<br />
Saturday, September 7th is Fiasco Gallery's Super Grand Opening 7000! It just so happens that Rebel Empire (Zac & Ethan from The Ragged Jubilee) are playing some cool tunes, and Leff Street Brewhouse and Soda Works will be pouring some awesome Fiasco Ginger Brew.<br />
It will be then that we will be promoting our upcoming, super-important <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/" target="_blank">Kickstarter</a> throwdown. Your support will not only help keep the burgeoning art (counter)culture in Paso alive, but with our funds we hope to help the SOTP teen group and open a small art supply kiosk. Funds will also help promotion of the emerging artists program at Fiasco, where one artist gets to show off their best work for a two month period. As with all Kickstarter programs, you even get something <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fredthursday/9594968500/" target="_blank">cool</a> if you donate. Everyone wins!<br />
<br />
October I will unveil my latest batch of craziness on<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/linnaeas-cafe-san-luis-obispo" target="_blank"> Linnaea's</a>. I previously thought I was going to show the Skulk series, but I have changed my mind. You'll just have to wait for the pictures. Which reminds me, check out the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fredthursday/" target="_blank">Flickr</a>s, it's exploding with new stuff...if you have a Flickr account, be sure to add me to see everything you're missing. I've also been dragged into the world of Twitter (<a href="https://twitter.com/nealbreton" target="_blank">@nealbreton</a>) and Instagram (@<a href="http://instagram.com/nealbretonart" target="_blank">nealbretonart</a>) Look at all the new opportunities to lurk interetically at yours truly. Until next time...<br />

It was like being on tour for a little while, except less smelly and a lot more rewarding. Oakland proved to be a great show, the people were nice and I even sold a <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fredthursday/8667756274/" target="_blank">piece</a> or two. Santa Barbara was, well, a learning experience. My pieces didn't hang the way I wanted them to, through no fault of the venue, and it's hard to explain without giving too much away, because the pieces themselves will get a facelift and probably end up being shown at Linnaea's in October. Ok, I can show one of the pieces, here:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzyGcRWl4vXE_kx4b-S8kHe44DDdoU-yE8EE2rRGsQ6ABkij5xf-q4FhymBEhoR9eSRPlyRqUJ81JFY2FuGr-OiebZWTcFihEHFNW3wo2v7-3PABtM-FsFYpF7p43GD7P49jU9t1HwvKu_/s1600/WP_20130604_005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzyGcRWl4vXE_kx4b-S8kHe44DDdoU-yE8EE2rRGsQ6ABkij5xf-q4FhymBEhoR9eSRPlyRqUJ81JFY2FuGr-OiebZWTcFihEHFNW3wo2v7-3PABtM-FsFYpF7p43GD7P49jU9t1HwvKu_/s320/WP_20130604_005.jpg" width="259" /></a></div>
<br />
I have such respect for people who create structures. I was always one to appreciate a nice looking building historically, but I think it's probably the <a href="http://www.sloarch.com/tag/adam-monkaba/" target="_blank">architect</a> <a href="http://www.mome.org/project/tom-di-santo" target="_blank">types</a> around me currently whom have made me think about living space and how spaces can be living things themselves as we populate them with trees, animals and people. These paintings also give me a new venue to experiment with color and line weight, which is always fun.<br />
In my journey last month I was happy to make the acquaintance of several artists and collaborators from LA to San Diego. The DIT (do it together) Alliance will hopefully prove to be an amazingly positive experience for artists from SD to SLO if we can help it. So many people, younger than me by at least 10-15 years, running non-profit venues, setting up shows, and giving opportunity to those that have talent or passion but don't know where to put it. Google these places: The LA Fort, The Dial (Murietta/Temecula), Che Cafe, Almost Holden, Bridgetown DIY, the LA Zine Fest and etc.<br />
After all this craziness, it was nice to take a trip to Portland. I missed this city, and about three days in I said to my friend Kate the Biking Giraffe "why don't we just...live here?". I think a city like that with so much stunning art, food, coffee, transportation/bikeability would definitely ensnare anyone who visited..unless you are a native Californian, then you would complain it's cloudy or something.<br />
I got a job at a cool store in town. You should maybe visit it on July 5th if you are in SLO:<br />

<br />
Look at all those fancy art stars! Also, a DJ named Velanche who is awesome, AAAND craft brewed rootbeer by Leff Street Brewhouse (which alcohol might be added to upon request). It should be a fun night, if jerks don't show up.<br />
Ok, back to work for me. I just finished a bunch of cute drawings for the New Times 55 Fiction and my hands are all inky and colored. I'll drop a link later...or you could check the Flickr page for a sneaky preview!<br />
<br />

<br />
Things coming up in the near future:<br />
<br />
I'll be filling in for the lovely and talented <a href="http://www.anneladdon.com/" target="_blank">Anne Laddon</a> at Studios on the Park this week, from Thursday April 11 through Saturday April 13 from 12 to 6. "Filling in" means I'll be painting in her studio, spilling <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tab_(soft_drink)" target="_blank">Tab</a> on her couch, attempting to sell her pretty pretty landscapes while I construct my <i>Skulk</i> series. I'm honored to have been asked. If you're in the area and sick/bored of what SLO has to offer (as I am), come to Studios on the Park, 1130 Pine Street, Paso Robles, CA.<br />
<br />
I have also been put in charge..."in charge"...of wrangling more artists for a festival in Paso Robles. The <a href="http://www.prcity.com/fota/" target="_blank">Paso Art Festival</a> has included an <a href="http://www.prcity.com/fota/artists/special-exhibitions.htm" target="_blank">Emerging Artists</a> Booth. It includes a hand-picked unit from the Young Savages group show. Each artist will be displaying 3 fairly new pieces of art, or I will be super disappointed in them.<br />
Quick glance info:<br />
Saturday, May 25th, from 10am to 4pm, in the park located directly across from the Studios on the Park building.<br />
It's free to attend, so bring some money to spend on some cool paintings.<br />
<br />
My friend Dave thinks he's being funny by writing a<a href="http://www.isthatyouneal.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> blog</a> about fake sightings of me. Ok, so maybe it is pretty funny. Check the Flickr soon. That is all.<br />

The San Luis Obispo Tribune article can be found <a href="http://www.sanluisobispo.com/2013/03/01/2412966/young-savages-art-show-paso-robles.html#storylink=misearch" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
The San Luis Obispo New Times article can be found<a href="http://www.newtimesslo.com/art/9220/noble-savages/" target="_blank"> here</a>.<br />
Tom Cochrun wrote a review of the show in his March 13th <a href="http://tomcochrunlightbreezes.blogspot.com/2013/03/the-leader-disconnect.html?spref=bl" target="_blank">blog</a>.<br />
The Paso Robles Press article written by <a href="http://www.swapzineslo.com/" target="_blank">Hayley Thomas</a> can be found<a href="http://www.hayleythomas.com/?p=1185" target="_blank"> here</a>.<br />
The show will be coming down on the 31st of March, do take a trip to Paso if you have the means.<br />
<br />
I'd like to thank the following people for making the job of curating such a large show much easier: Joshua Brinckerhoff, Anne Laddon, Sasha Irving, Jennifer Grant, Amy Fordyce, Kelly Stewart, Bill Benica. These people were the unsung heroes in promoting one of the most successful group shows I have been a part of.<br />

<br />
I can't paint knife-wielding foxes all the time. My other, more personal work has some ambiguity to it, mostly falling into nature themed areas.<br />

Currently, you can see a handful of these pieces at Brick House Goods in San Luis Obispo, a slick, tasteful, clever furniture and housewares shop in the middle of downtown. An article with a word mentioning the display can be seen <a href="http://www.sanluisobispo.com/2013/03/20/2436846/utilitarian-chic-fits-into-almost.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

At the close of one of the most comprehensive group shows I have been a part of on the Central Coast, I am relieved to have completed such a large task of coordinating between talent and venue. It was great to be a fly on the wall, listening to how artists & patrons--people--perceive works of art. I heard several comments on my latest acrylic work, the <i>Skulk</i> series:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN6z513kmxkgHN19sxXKi_CoMwsp7mcUrv7H9xLLoR8uZTpBA21DPlMJiohLng0jDh7MFgrkDQ__JTS9SWMR0igflDTm_brdTqmksoDLW5fr7O2kj4Eym4DNUCT4xA_-KSHsOWWwU9zDqA/s1600/skulk+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="254" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN6z513kmxkgHN19sxXKi_CoMwsp7mcUrv7H9xLLoR8uZTpBA21DPlMJiohLng0jDh7MFgrkDQ__JTS9SWMR0igflDTm_brdTqmksoDLW5fr7O2kj4Eym4DNUCT4xA_-KSHsOWWwU9zDqA/s320/skulk+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Skulk 2, acrylic on canvas, 16x20"</i></div>
Of the people I happened to catch commenting on it, I was given a prognosis of heavy issues with my mother or with women. Despite varying opinions, these pieces are not about women at all. I do not recall ever explaining my work in great detail within the confines of a blog or an interview, but here goes.<br />
The very first drawings of the Skulk was part of a larger series of totem/herald illustrations I did with gouache and ink on watercolor paper. (See Flickr<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fredthursday/sets/72157630410395842/" target="_blank"> here</a>) They were very popular and the entire series sold, including my very first acrylic painting after a 5 year hiatus from the medium. The buyer, a woman, felt empowered by the image. She had major changes going on in her life and the painting spoke to her. I felt great about selling it to such a recently freed spirit, and had a good hunch that if I made more paintings similar I could probably reach more people and, let's be honest, sell more pieces.<br />
The idea was put on the shelf until I spoke with the director of the Studios on the Park. As we were talking about putting together the group show, she mentioned that I should do a solo show of some sort. Reviewing my Flickr site, she enjoyed several things, including the totem series. When it came time to turn in my work for the show, she pushed me to make a larger version (4 feet by 5 feet!) of the 16x20" Skulk painting, which later sold to a very classy woman who owns Deer Run in Cambria, CA, a cunning curio shop with amazing art and other artifacts.<br />

What is it about these figures that evokes such reactions? Foxes, as I have noticed, are very popular imagery at the moment. The Young Savages show yielded not only my foxes, but artists Isaac Yorke and Beth Reninger also created fox-themed pieces. If I was the least bit hip, I would of probably avoided using them. Fox imagery is extremely varied from being messengers (Native Americans) to omens of rain (Japan) to bastions of intelligence (Celtic). They signify various afterlife connotations depending on the religion. Maybe it's the color--red--which can signify passion, desire, intensity.<br />
If I was going to tell you that I thought of these things as I created the initial Skulk drawings, I would be relying on some heavy reverse engineering. It's simply a matter of common sense, a mixture of the peripheral fox knowledge and the need for a group of some kind of animal to be clever and slick enough to travel in a group on the prowl, not out of revenge, but on the offensive. Because they <i>could</i>, not because they needed to.<br />
As this series unravels, and will most likely be shown at Linnaea's Cafe in October, I hope to create an entire room of these empowered figures, which in turn will create a visceral response to the viewer as they submit themselves to the will of the Skulk.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5129739289943282747.post-68732536391701665272013-01-23T17:11:00.001-08:002013-01-23T17:11:49.003-08:00Hello Lurkers and Lurkettes-<br />
<br />
It's been a productive year so far, I'm excited to say. Three big shows are in the works, which will keep me pretty busy this year. The newly relocated Tigerlily Salon on Higuera will be hosting a group show. I usually hate theme related shows, but this one seemed pretty cool and it has a lot of my fave peeps in it. Enticed yet? Yeah, whatever. <a href="http://www.facebook.com/events/105100229666655/?fref=ts" target="_blank">Eat Your Heart Out</a> will include my pals <a href="http://www.lenarushingart.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Lena</a>, Sawdust, Lisa, Lakin and Issac. Show's on Friday, February 1st from 6p to 9p. Here's a dandy flyer:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdglVZz7GQnaPWbVWIIppfm6hiRpi_iJXEigdwi1W0P7L1SfWuNreQZdc4g8uwLDTfoMqKYatf1FlYSDAsC9p-x2DqzIL7UmX5yt1L-7FJRdD-xWkCa9hxPPy2WBTQDkxVtJRlKb_p4jgI/s1600/flyer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="269" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdglVZz7GQnaPWbVWIIppfm6hiRpi_iJXEigdwi1W0P7L1SfWuNreQZdc4g8uwLDTfoMqKYatf1FlYSDAsC9p-x2DqzIL7UmX5yt1L-7FJRdD-xWkCa9hxPPy2WBTQDkxVtJRlKb_p4jgI/s320/flyer.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In other news, I was asked to curate a show at <a href="http://www.studiosonthepark.org/" target="_blank">Studios on the Park</a> in Paso Robles. The Young Savages showcase will provide exposure for about 25 emerging or burgeoning artists. The list is super long, you should look at this flyer:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDhG13PRsP8nV5zWflu7usJBvhZ7y-ZperuDF04rJHQLNhGJj_ln1zuOHseWCA6vtzXr6kHyJzo71OegzMHsPoBvGLmp1EKt7KWIBNV8-0NWbLlqjrnVBq9XkBHHMpTTrOP2HBSvHdnTZJ/s1600/young+savages+color.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDhG13PRsP8nV5zWflu7usJBvhZ7y-ZperuDF04rJHQLNhGJj_ln1zuOHseWCA6vtzXr6kHyJzo71OegzMHsPoBvGLmp1EKt7KWIBNV8-0NWbLlqjrnVBq9XkBHHMpTTrOP2HBSvHdnTZJ/s320/young+savages+color.jpg" width="207" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's like...everyone, right? Well, almost. There are some really good artists that I didn't ask, but they will make an appearance at a later show. The main point of the show was to infuse a little youth into the gallery scene up there. I thought it was funny for them to ask me to lead a youth movement show, as I am no spring chicken, but "Mid-to-Late-Thirties Savages" just didn't have the same ring to it, despite the truth of it all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Either way, I'm excited to see what some of the newer, twenty-something artists that we've invited into the fold will come up with. You should be too, many pieces will be under $200, and 2013 is a great year to buy original artwork from some up and comers. The show is on Saturday, March 2nd, from 5 to 8. Check the flyer for the address, lazy butts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, I've decided to go back to painting acrylic on canvas. I know I said I'd never do it, internet, but I didn't have a choice. I'm sorry, but you won't be disappointed. Check the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/fredthursday" target="_blank">Flickr</a> for more info, in the meantime here's one of hopefully many pieces I make this year:</div>

Haven't shown this one, titled <i>The Uneasy Alliance</i>, just yet, but it is for sale.<a href="mailto:breton.neal@gmail.com" target="_blank"> Inquire</a> within if you are interested. Goodbye for now, lurkers, thanks for stopping by.</div>

I have to say that all the trouble I went through to install the Pizza Lords show was totally worth it. Lots of people connected with the piece, and I got to meet some awesome artists like <a href="http://www.audreymroy.com/" target="_blank">Audrey Roy</a> and <a href="http://cargocollective.com/cassialupo" target="_blank">Cassia Lupo</a>. Unfortunately, <a href="http://www.thesappystudio.com/" target="_blank">Walt Hall</a> wasn't there to stalk, but I'm sure glad the guys from <a href="http://theraggedjubilee.com/" target="_blank">The Ragged Jubilee</a> came by to say hi! Anyway, here are some pictures. Be jealous:<br />
